History

Conifers currently educates over one hundred children but in the early part of the last century it was Easebourne, Midhurst and District Cottage Hospital. A nurse with her patients can just be seen by the verandah (in the main image).

Conifers was brought into existence as a school in 1934 by Miss Barbara Gayford and her sister Joyce who together ran it for 25 years. In 1959 it was taken over by Mrs Sproule who added extensions to accommodate the growing number of pupils. However, the building itself is unchanged and from the road looks very much as it did when it was the Cottage Hospital.

Maybe dwell a pause next time you pass by this small piece of our local community that has endured as a place of care and learning for over 100 years.
