PRE-PREP (Y1 & 2)

Enthusiastic, nurturing specialist teachers inspire our Pre-Prep children.

When Conifers pupils enter Pre-Prep in Year 1, at 5 or 6 years old, they are enthusiastic and ready to learn after an inspiring start in the Early Years. Having such a solid foundation results in a smooth and easy transition into the Key Stage 1 curriculum. For new pupils joining Conifers in Year 1, the welcoming atmosphere and small class sizes allow children to settle in quickly.

As pupils enter Pre-Prep they begin to embrace a more formalised approach in lessons broadly following the KS 1 curriculum. Pupils are taught English, maths, science, history and geography by an experienced class teacher while art, languages (Spanish, French, Mandarin), DT, PE and music are taught by specialist teachers. Years 1 and 2 continue to improve their flourishing skills in daily phonic and numeracy lessons which are taught in small groups with differentiation specific to each pupil’s individual learning.

Pre-Prep years are focused on helping children progress in all areas and our pupils continue to build their self-confidence through learning new skills, being encouraged to ask questions and explore new subjects and activities inside and outside the classroom, including swimming, ICT, and a wide range of outdoor adventures. Sport increases to 3 hours per week.

Our Pre-Prep pupils start their day at 8.30am and finish at 3.30pm, but with morning and after-school clubs, wraparound care is available from 8am- 5:15pm.

Throughout the school week all pupils are immersed into a wide variety of co-curricular clubs such as forest school, outdoor learning, drama, cooking, art and various sports.  Another exciting element of their week is becoming part of Conifers ‘Bouncing Beats Band’ which presents the opportunity to perform each year at the Chichester Music Festival.

At Conifers we value the importance of children extending their learning outside of the school environment through topic related field trips.  Some recent school trips have included the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, Portsmouth Historic Dockyards and Sealife Centre.
